Andy Castle, MIPD - Background and Experience

castle defence

I am Guernsey-born and have lived here most of my life.

Although I originally trained as a teacher and worked in the UK during the 1970s, I came back to Guernsey and joined the Civil Service in 1976 working in 6 different departments of the States including Education, the former Civil Service Board and the Department of Health.

In 1993 I became Director of Personnel at the Board of Health responsible for recruitment, training and development, personnel strategy, policy and procedures, manpower planning, establishment control and industrial relations for 1800 staff. This included negotiating with 4 employee groups on a range of conditions and policy issues. During this period I became IPD qualified.

During nearly 30 years in the Civil Service I had several periods serving on the Executive of the Civil Service Association (now called the Association of Guernsey Civil Servants), including 2 terms as its President. I led negotiating teams on pay and conditions claims and took a special interest in dealing with individual grievance and disciplinary cases.

In the last 7 years I have represented some 150 clients in employment law matters and have usually achieved an excellent outcome for the client.
